Is Jesus El Shaddai?

1. How would you describe Jesus?  What words would you use?

List them here. Think back to the attributes of El Shaddai and circle the words that pertain to Almighty God.

That should answer the question should it not?  But let us go through and methodically find what the Word of God says about Jesus as Almighty God, El Shaddai.  Does the Bible identify Jesus as mighty, powerful, and transcendent?  Is He connected with the act of creation?  Is He the nourisher, the strength giver, the satisfier, who pours Himself into the lives of believers?  Does He chasten and purge and judge creation? Is He abundantly able to save above what we could ever wish or dream?

Almighty God

2. Why is God Almighty?  Luke 1:37 (King James and New International 2011)

He is able to carry out all His plans and purposes to the glorious and triumphant ends he foresaw at the beginning.  He is able to subdue all things to Himself.  Nothing is impossible for Him.

Is Jesus Almighty God?

     A.   Jesus is part of the Godhead (Trinity)

3.  What is present in Christ bodily form?

Read:  Colossians 2:9  John 1:14

He is everything that God is because the fullness of the Godhead is in Him.  It could not be said more plainly.  The Greek πλήρωμα) “pleroma” generally refers to the totality of divine powers. In Him is 100% of the Godhead.

1 Timothy 3:16 16 Beyond all question, the mystery from which true godliness springs is great(The mystery of godliness…Jesus came, paid the sin penalty, and is making us who believe godly.): He appeared in the flesh    ( refers to the virgin birth, His spiritual pre-existence from eternity but became a man and lived in ordinary human conditions), was vindicated(justified when He came back from the dead) by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory. He is now in Heaven at God’s right hand and we worship Him because His power as El Shaddai has wrought redemption for mankind.

(King James Version  And without controversy(obviously) great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.)

4.  When was Jesus chosen for the work of salvation?

Read: 1 Peter 1:20

We are plainly told that Jesus was God manifested in the flesh.  He was present and active during creation.  Jesus is El Shaddai, Almighty God.

Only God Almighty can forgive sin.

5. What does God do with our sins and why?

Read: Isaiah 43:25

       B.  Jesus forgave sin in the Bible.

6.  What was the crowd expecting Jesus to do?

Read:  Matthew 9:2

What did He say to the man?

 7.  List other places where Jesus forgave sin.

El Shaddai is Almighty God, powerful and sufficient for all our needs.  He alone has the authority to forgive sin.  Jesus is El Shaddai, Almighty God.

     C.   Only God Almighty is entitled to receive worship.

8.  Who are we to worship?  What does God say about sharing His glory?

Read:  Exodus 20:3, Deuteronomy 6:13,   Isaiah 42:8

Jesus accepted the worship of others.
A true prophet would rebuke worship, but Jesus accepted it as His due.

Matthew 8:2, Mat 2:2,  Mat 14:33 Luke 7:47-50

9.   Read the following Scriptures in the New International Version and in the King James Version.  What differences do you see?

 Matthew 9:18

Matthew 15:25

 Matthew 20:20

     D. Jesus claimed to be God, which was the reason the rulers and High Priests set their sights on Him.

John 10:33

Those who heard Him understood what He was saying.  They could not deny their own eyes.  They saw His many miracles which were His credentials.  They accused Him of calling Himself God, which is exactly what He was doing and rightly so, because He is El Shaddai, Almighty God.

     E.  The Bible says Jesus is the Almighty.

10. Who are the spirits proclaiming God Almighty?

Read:  Revelation 1:5-8, Rev 4:8, Isaiah 6:3

Jesus is identified as El Shaddai, God Almighty who embodies all of time and eternity.

11.   Who is the witness that all that is written is true and why should we believe Him?

Revelation 1:5

Jesus is the faithful witness that what is written in the Bible about Him is true and we can believe it because He was there and saw it all happen.  His power made it happen.  He is the first to rise from the dead never to die again so those who are His own may follow in resurrection. He is exalted and every knee shall bow in worship of Him. Only El Shaddai could accomplish His purpose to loose us from our sins by the shedding of His blood.  He is infinite God and He alone is able to sacrifice His blood for an infinite number of sins.

  Rev 1:17-18

John saw the glorified Christ, who had been living, was dead and is alive forevermore.  He has the keys of authority and power over death and the grave.  I am glad He has those keys because He is El Shaddai, Almighty God who sheds forth His blessing in abundance to those who believe.  A man could not do what Jesus did.  He had to identify with man by being one of us, but He had to be God in order to bring about the purpose of Elohim, the Creator who loved and loves, and sustained and sustains  His creation before and since time began.  He had to be God made flesh to take the punishment required by Jehovah, who is righteous and loves Justice.  He had to be 100% man and 100% God, El Shaddai, with the sufficiency, power, supply of grace and purpose to carry out our salvation by pouring Himself out on the cross for our sins.  And as a bonus, He continues to shed forth His grace, to nourish, supply, and satisfy our needs.  He is ever ready to chasten, purify, and cleanse those He loves .

Notice that v 8 and v 5 ties the Alpha and Omega and v5 & 17 ties the first and the last with v 18 indicating the one being referred to is “He that liveth, and was dead”, thus making Jesus the Almighty God, El Shaddai.

     F. His contemporaries recognized that He was God Almighty and worshipped Him.

 12.  When did these acts of worship occur?

Matthew 28:8-10

 John 20:28

 Matthew 16:16

Jesus did not chastise Thomas for calling Him God, but instead commended Him.

Jesus goes on to say that Peter’s revelation that Jesus is Son of the Almighty God would be the basis for the Church and the gates of Hell would not prevail against it.  Only El Shaddai could make such a promise and have the strength and self sufficiency to keep that promise.

     G.   Jesus is ready to fulfill His role as El Shaddai when He purifies, chastens, and judges us.

Read: Hebrews 12:3-6

This is a quote from Proverbs 3:11-12  11 My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, 12 because the LORD disciplines those he loves,
as a father the son he delights in.

The Greek word for son means full-grown son.  We sometimes think we are mature and do not need His chastening (discipline).  We have to remember that if we are walking with Him, even if it has been for a long, long time, we still wear the mantle of flesh. We suffer because we are stupid, and are sinful. If we refuse to judge ourselves, El Shaddai will do it for us.  We still need His guidance and discipline if we are His children.
